UNICEF has again called on the Taliban to lift all restrictions on education and allow every girl and woman in Afghanistan to return immediately to schools and universities.

UNICEF stressed that during five years of Taliban rule, more than 2.6 million girls in Afghanistan have been denied access to secondary education.

In a statement posted on X on Thursday, UNICEF said Afghanistan remains the only country in the world where secondary and higher education are formally closed to girls and women.

Expressing deep concern over the continuing situation, the UN agency said the closure of schools and universities had deprived millions of girls of a fundamental right and placed their futures at serious risk.

UNICEF called for the immediate removal of all education bans and urged urgent measures to allow Afghan girls and women to return unconditionally to all levels of education across the country.

Alongside UNICEF’s appeal, Amnesty International has also launched a campaign marking five years since girls were banned from education, calling for public solidarity and urgent international action to pressure the Taliban.

The human rights organisation described the period as five years of shattered dreams and aspirations and five years of injustice.
