I am thrilled to share the launch of the #Sima_Samar_Award – a global recognition of those who demonstrate extraordinary courage in defending democracy, human dignity, and civic freedoms.

Created by Resilient Societies and officially launched at the #Ottawa_Civic_Space_Summit, the award comes at a time when civic space is under growing strain around the world. It serves as a powerful reminder that those working for justice, for the rule of law and democratic participation are not alone.

The Sima Samar Award celebrates courage under pressure, elevates innovation in the face of repression, and strengthens solidarity across borders.

I am deeply honoured to serve as Chair of the inaugural adjudication committee, alongside an exceptional jury: #Baroness_Fiona_Hodgson, whose leadership has long championed women’s rights and the protection of those whose voices are too often marginalized; Sally Armstrong, acclaimed journalist and advocate for women, peace, and justice; Sabine Sparwasser, distinguished diplomat and defender of democratic values; and #Radhika_Coomaraswamy, globally respected human rights leader and advocate for those facing violence and repression.

Dr. Sima Samar’s life and leadership so powerfully reflect the resilience and moral courage this award stands for. Her deeply moving remarks at the Summit – and the thoughtful fireside conversation moderated by #Adrian_Harewood – reminded all of us that resilience is not passive; it is the conscious choice to continue defending dignity, equality, and freedom even in the face of repression and loss.

It was also a great honour to have Her Honour Hon. Edith Dumont, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, join us for the launch of the Award, underscoring the importance of safeguarding civic space, human rights, and democratic values at this critical moment.

My sincere thanks to Resilient Societies and its board, chaired by Chris Eaton, Cooperation Canada, and all those who contributed to this important initiative and its launch at the Ottawa Civic Space Summit. I look forward to the work ahead and to shining a light on the remarkable individuals and movements this award will support.
